Today, May 17th, is Norway Day! It’s celebrted much like our 4th of July with hundreds of costumed parades and vibrant fireworks—and commemorates the writing of their Constitution in 1814.

My favorite place in the world to visit is Norway. I’ve been to southern and western Norway in July, and northern Norway deep inside the Arctic Circle in February. Both experiences were spectacular!

When I toured southern Norway in 2011, I made a side trip to the picturesque coastal town of Arendal—the home of my fictional Hansen family—which lies just 90 miles across the North Sea from Denmark. Recently Disney studios turned Arendal into “Arendelle,” and in the process fueled speculation that Anna and Elsa’s parents’ sunken ship was the same ship that Arielle explored in The Little Mermaid, a story written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. Totally possible!

But I digress. Arendal looks nothing like the landscape in Frozen, but is beautiful in its own right, as you can see.

In 2015 I went to see the Northern Lights. This was #1 on my Bucket List and they did not disappoint in any way. I can’t imagine being able to watch this magnificent display nearly every night—providing 1) the sun dips below the horizon at night and 2) there aren’t any clouds.

Now I’m set to return a third time in July of 2017.

Norwegians almost all speak English (half of their signs and advertisements are in what’s becoming the “universal” language) and they are very friendly and welcoming to visitors. And—they love to talk about their homeland: its legends, myths, and history. Every time I go, I pick up new information and new story ideas.

Norway is by far the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. I can’t wait to go back.

It won’t be the last time I go, either.

Want to come with me?

Oslo, 1942 – Nazi Germany occupied Norway from 1940-1945

High school chemistry teacher, Teigen Hansen, managed to dodge Nazi attention until the day he was asked to sign Vidkun Quisling’s Declaration of Loyalty and swear to teach Nazi ideals. Mass refusal put 1,000 male teachers in prison. When they still refused, 500 of them were sent to a Nazi labor camp deep inside Norway’s Arctic Circle. When Teigen is released after seven months under frigid and grueling conditions, he immediately joins Milorg—Norway’s Resistance—and  becomes  part  of  the Royal Shakespearean Acting Troupe, a traveling group of resistance workers under cover.

Because of past experiences Selby Sunde hates men, so she has no problem “dating” Nazi officers and plying them for covert information. Her resolve is rocked when Teigen Hansen joins the troupe. Untrained yet determined, he never does what she expects—but always what’s right. As their Milorg assignments grow increasingly dangerous, it’s Teigen who saves her life as together they work to defeat Norway’s enemies & traitors.

Chapter One
February 9, 1942
Oslo, Norway

Teigen Hansen slid the paper across the worn top of the Oslo Secondary School headmaster’s desk. “Absolutely not. I will not agree to this.”
Overlærer Oskar Jung glanced sideways at the German officer wearing an expertly fitted Nazi uniform and hovering at the edge of his desk, but Teigen refused to look up at the man. He barely restrained himself from spitting on the officer’s shiny black boots.
Oskar focused his attention on Teigen and leaned forward a little. “You do understand that every teacher in Norway is required to sign this Declaration of Loyalty.”
Teigen kept his voice calm and his eyes level. “I have heard the radio announcements, yes.”
“And yet you are refusing?”
The light in Oskar Jung’s eyes did not match his stern tone. That intrigued Teigen; perhaps he was not going to be fired on the spot for remaining loyal to occupied Norway.
Teigen nodded slowly and quoted bits of the declaration—he wanted his point to be very clearly made, no matter how the Neanderthal in brown responded. “I am. I will not sign any declaration of loyalty to the Nazi regime. And I will not agree to promote my students’ understanding of Nazi ideology.”
The German officer cleared his throat. Loudly.
Teigen deigned to look up at the man out of the corner of his eye. “Perhaps you need a glass of water,” he said in perfect German.
The man startled, then glared at him and answered in the same language. “Perhaps you need to understand what is happening in the world.”
Teigen ignored the taunt and addressed his principal. “Are we finished?”
Oskar nodded as he carefully folded the unsigned declaration. “There will be a letter in your mailbox tomorrow stating that you refused to sign this.”
Teigen rose slowly to his feet. He straightened his back to make the point that at six-foot-six he towered a full half-a-foot over the glaring SS officer. “I understand.”
He turned to leave the principal’s office when the officer barked in German, “You have not been dismissed.”
Teigen waited, looking over his shoulder at the officer. “Was erwarten Sie von mir?” What do you require of me?
The German clacked his heels together and extended a stiff right arm. “Heil Hitler.”
The expected response was obvious, but Teigen was damned if he’d give it. He dipped his head, flashed a crooked grin, and answered in Norse. “Of course.”
Then he spun on his heel and exited the small office, closing the door behind him.

This is so very, very hard as I lived in Europe for five years and before that, it was my dream spot for vacations. However, though Vienna and the Austrian countryside are extremely beautiful, I have to say that my all time favorite vacation spot would have to be Scotland as the place to be if I’m going to be away from the US. If I’m in the US, I would have to say that it’s New Mexico where I live now.

The reason I choose Scotland is it’s like no other place in the world. Most everywhere is green, it rains a lot and it was so different than the deserts of Nevada where I lived when I visited the United Kingdom.

What we did was find a single place where we could home base. We were lucky to find a farm with 4 small Nordic cabins on the property near Stirling. From there, we drove near and far. We went to the Borderlands and as far as the Isle of Skye, where my husband’s family is from.

Each of us got to choose one place to spend a day. I choose the ruined abbeys left by Henry VIII. We went from one end of the country to the other. We started in sunshine in the borderlands to full rain in Nairn. All in all, it was a wonderful day.

One of the things I loved the most were the pubs and the people. I never heard a harsh or unkind word, though I do know it happens. The people were wonderful and gracious.
Scotland is very much a part of many of my stories. Lots of my heroes are from there and many of them have that wonderful lilt I so love. I’ve been there twice and frankly, can’t wait to go again.

Hooked on a Feeling is a romance about nurse Reggie Genarro, who wants to forget she’s part of the Genarro mob family. But when she finds ex-lover, Michael Vanzetti, dumped in the garbage, she must establish the name Genarro isn’t synonymous with the word mob, which may prove an impossible task as her feelings for Michael might overwhelm her before she gets the job done.

Excerpt:

April 1973

“Genarro, you’re going to be okay…do you hear me?”

Reggie turned toward her rescuer, hoping terror wasn’t reflected in her eyes. He was tall with dark hair peeking from under his helmet. He had the bluest eyes she’d ever seen on any person.

He shook her a little. “Look, you’re the only one who can help these men.”

The mortars had taken them by surprise. She’d been in surgery with three other nurses when the bombs hit as the doctor threw her to the ground and then threw himself over the patient on the table. The onslaught had been brief in the early morning light. Their hospital unit had not been hit before but with the enemy coming closer and closer and the end near, the fighting had taken on a new fierceness.

“Genarro…what’s your first name?”

She stared at him and again noticed his eyes. Like the sky in Nevada - blue, deep, and endless. She could watch them all day, but the force of his hand nearly knocked her on her ass. She blinked several times and remembered where she was. Her throat constricted, and it was everything she could do not to puke. Her eyes darted around her for a moment or two, as her mind rearranged the morning into the right scenario. The slap was probably the best thing he could have done for her.

At the risk of sounding dramatic, Niagara Falls simply calls me. Funnily enough, what first really drew me to them was my reading of a novel years ago that was set there. It was a historical novel, based in Niagara Falls, Canada, just after the turn of the twentieth century during the start of World War I. To be frank, I didn’t particularly care for the novel overall, but I found myself enchanted by the description of the setting. I interpreted a thematic undertone perceiving Niagara Falls as a natural phenomenon that was being, as has seemed not uncommon, overtaken or at least influenced by human construction and interference.

I felt fascinated that this was the perception of (some of) the characters even then, more than 100 years ago—how at the time, there were heated debates about the Falls: was it justifiable to divert the flow of water to generate electricity, for example, and if so, where does the line get drawn? At what point is it inappropriate for the human species to manipulate the natural world to suit its desires? (A salient question right now indeed, it seems…)

Now, of course, Niagara Falls seems as much a place for casinos and entertainment as it does a natural wonder around which such decadence has been built. I find this also interesting to observe, particularly in the context of its relative debate counterpart in the novel. Is everything we build and develop “progress”? What, if anything, do we owe the natural systems and formations of the planet on which we live?

These questions do not have easy answers, as I see it. I myself demonstrated the tension between them during my solo writing retreat to Niagara Falls in 2013. It was unquestionably the earth-based, natural phenomenon of the Falls that I went to see—the vast tourism that surrounds it didn’t and doesn’t interest me in the slightest. And yet, I simultaneously benefited from the contemporary convenience of a Canadian-side Fallsview hotel, which offered me a room with a stunning view of the Falls (the recollection of which literally makes me yearn to be there right now) and unquestionably represents human interruption of the environment.

I embarked upon this writing retreat in February of 2013 (much cheaper during the off-season!) with the intention of partaking in and focusing solely on writing. I went by myself, for three days, booked a room with a pristine view of both the American and Canadian Falls—and stayed in that room virtually the entire time I was there. At the time, I was finishing the short stories in what would become my two single-author story collections, If… Then: a collection of erotic romance stories and Safe: a collection of erotic stories.

I had all the more motivation to locate this writing retreat at Niagara Falls because one of the stories in If… Then is partially set there. Protagonist Shelley also feels tension around the Falls, though for quite different reasons from those described above. Shelley adores Niagara Falls, a favorite vacation spot of her family’s while she was growing up, and she much looks forward to her and her husband’s five-year anniversary trip to visit them. She also experiences, however, an involuntarily association between visiting the Falls and memories of her sister, who befell a tragedy five years prior only days after the wedding anniversary she and her husband are celebrating.

I thus found being there, looking out at the same view my characters had, doubly exhilarating. The inspiration was even more successful than I had hoped and expected, and I accomplished more writing-wise in that three days than I had in an embarrassing length of time prior. The simultaneous predictability and wonder of Niagara Falls entranced me even as it seemed to propel forth a well of creativity and focus that had previously been slightly blocked.

To be truthful, I don’t know exactly what draws me to the Falls. Their extraordinary combination of mystery, beauty, consistency, and power both beckon and captivate me…and in appreciating that, it occurs to me I don’t really need to know why. It is just the case. My enchantment with them supported me in finishing the short story collections I had long planned and wanted to write, and for that tiny personal offering amidst their universal appeal, I revere them all the more.

Excerpt from “Shattered Angels” in If… Then:

“I’m sorry again about dinner,” Shelley murmured finally, pulling away as she sat up. Automatically she reached to straighten her hair.
“Stop apologizing,” Kenny said, reaching for her wrist, “and stop messing with your hair. It looks amazing.”
Shelley smiled weakly as she dropped her hands. Her husband went to the phone on the table in the corner, and she breathed a sigh of relief as she heard the low murmur of his voice and knew he was canceling their dinner reservation.
Her gaze landed on the huge white tub as he passed the bathroom on the way back. “Maybe we should try out the whirlpool.”
Kenny switched directions and turned on the faucet, launching a miniature version of the thundering phenomenon out the window. As he reached to check the water temperature, Shelley felt a familiar stirring inside her at the sight of his lean figure encased in jet-black dress slacks and white shirt. His tie was still immaculate. The strength of the attraction made her blink as Kenny straightened and came back toward her. Her eyes dropped to the crotch of his trousers to see if his own arousal was still present.
       It was.
He saw her looking. When she looked back to meet his eyes, she knew what she was feeling was obvious in hers. And her desire felt different this time; this was not the desperate yearning for distraction and grounding that had been piling up in her so much for the past few weeks.
She simply wanted him. She wanted her husband.
The awareness made Shelley smile involuntarily, and Kenny looked like he wanted to leap at her. He took a step forward, and she put up her hand.
“Stop,” she whispered. She wanted to look at him. She almost said the words out loud, but as she drank in his appearance, the view of the Niagara Falls to her right suddenly taking a distant second, no words came.
“Strip,” she finally said. Though it was a command, it came out as a simple word, almost an observation, the softness of a request with no power play in its agenda.
Kenny held her gaze as he lifted his hands to his tie, and she felt herself grow wet as he began to pull it loose, the weight of his eyes like the press of his body against her. Those eyes said more than the visible hardness of his cock how much he wanted her, how precisely he felt the same thing she did as he pulled the tie from around his collar and unbuttoned his top button. She could feel the measured restraint in his slowness, the steadiness that kept him from ripping everything off and pouncing on her. It was the same energy, the same patience, that allowed him the groundedness and perceptivity that so attuned him to knowing what she needed.
