Author Kay Phoenix

A couple years ago, I took a jaunt to Barcelona, Spain.  The reason for the trip was to visit someone I know who is going to college there.  I'm so proud of her!  But, of course, we managed to fit in a lot of touristy things as well.

The first day, we trekked to what is probably one of the most photographed buildings in the world - The Sagrada Familia. This cathedral is amazing, as cathedrals go.  I've been lucky enough to have visited some other famous cathedrals in Europe, but this one is now my favorite - officially!  The non-traditional design of old vs. new, was fantastic and once you step inside the door, it's as if you've just gone to Heaven.  Well, that's how it felt for me.  The burst of colors from the stained glass windows took my breath away. The gorgeous, white pillars (no two the same), the intricate ceiling design, and the open, spacious feel was so majestic.

Another highlight of the trip was a drive up to Monseratt and a nearby winery, Oller Dl Mas.  Being an amateur geologist, I particularly enjoyed the drive. The views from the top of the mountain were breathtaking, and the view of the mountain from the winery's fields was surreal.

But, my favorite part of the trip was a day-long tour we took to the Salvador Dali Museum and to see his home on the beach.  Salvador Dali has long been my favorite artist, and this was something I never thought I'd be able to see.  So, it was a pilgrimage of sorts, a long time in the making.  I'd be lying if I didn't say my eyes were filled with tears a few times that day, especially during the few minutes that I got to spend alone in the room with his crypt (how that happened in such a crowded place I'll never know - I'll chalk it up to magic).  The aura in his home was palpable to me, I sensed a welcoming, fun spirit (like a child) and wished I could have had a personal tour of his home from him while he was alive.  Seeing his studio as he left it, complete with used paint brushes and the half-finished angel he was working on was incredible personal and touching. I did feel as if he'd left some of himself there, or as if he's never really left. I will always remember that day fondly.

Excerpt:

“So, how are you feeling today?” a familiar voice asked behind him. He didn’t have to turn to know who it was, but he turned anyway, temporarily forgetting about his sunburn until he saw the shocked expression on her face.
“Whoa! No sunblock either? I had some, you could have asked,” she giggled. “That’ll peel for sure.”
Blue! Brilliant, shimmering blue eyes. He hadn’t seen her eyes during their hike, as they’d been hidden behind sunglasses the whole time, and he’d always been a sucker for blue eyes. Her blonde hair hung long, loose and wavy as she leaned casually against the door frame.
“I see you’ve already made yourself quite at home,” she said. “Randall told me he let you use the conference room.”
“What are you doing here?” he asked in a tone that sounded a bit too firm.
“Oh, no ‘How are you?’ or ‘Nice to see you?’” She tilted her head to the side, causing a loose curl to graze her breast.
He turned back to the coffee. “I didn’t mean to sound rude. You just surprised me.”
