My Sexy Saturday

Have you ever visited a graveyard to see the stone where someone you loved was buried?  Of course, we all have.  But, what if you knew that the person wasn't dead, and that their death had been faked while they were placed in witness protection?  Would you still go even if doing so might place you in danger?

Here is a snippet from my soon to be released novella "Borealis Ardor" which will be available February 7 at  https://museituppublishing.com/bookstore/index.php/our-authors/66-our-authors/authors-p/411-kay-phoenix.

“You shouldn’t be here, Lauren.  Leave quickly.” The voice stopped me in my tracks.  It was David’s voice, in my head.  But, I shrugged it off and walked forward until I saw the new stone and the rectangle of earth in front of it that had noticeably less pine needles than the surrounding area.

     I knelt beside it.

“David Alan Wagner.  Beloved Son, Brother and Friend.”  The lines of the letters were etched deep and black, contrasting heavily against the light grey stone.  I gently lay the roses down and traced the letters with my finger.  There was a cross carved below the words.  I ran my hand along the entire edge of the top of the stone, feeling the rough edges in contrast to the freshly polished front and back.  I wondered how long the stone had been there.  Dad assured me he had taken care of the funeral expenses, and he must have made sure there was a rush order on the headstone.  There was a fresh bouquet of white roses lying at the base of the stone and it made me feel deeply saddened for his family, as well as for him.  As much as dad irritated the living hell out of me with his overprotective gestures, if I had to disappear forever and have him think I was dead, it would break my heart.  After we lost mom, we were all the family we had.

I loved David with my whole heart.  Even though we had only been together for two of the six months that he was assigned to me, I knew that he was the “one”.  I just knew it.  There was no explanation.  And, I was the “one” for him as well.  But, now he was gone, and it was unlikely that I would see him again, at least not any time soon.

I reached up to trace the “D” again and saw a strange light flash across the polished surface of the stone, which I realized with horror to be a set of headlights.

Who would be coming to a graveyard at this hour? Besides me of course? Teenagers with a Ouija board and bottle of Strawberry Hill wine in tow, perhaps.

I could take no chances.  I could have been followed.

COVER REVEAL and "My Sexy Saturday"

I have great news!  My novella "Borealis Ardor" will be released on February 7, 2014, with www.MuseitUppublishing.com as part of their "Four Seasons of Passion" series.  My cover designer, Suzannah Safi of www.design.suzannahsafi.com did a great job on the cover!

Here is a sexy snippet...
I had no business driving all the way from Laguna Hills, California to Arizona to see his grave in the state that I was in.  I didn’t know what was wrong with me but I was more forgetful and flighty that I’d ever been. It had only been two months since the accident, most of which I couldn’t remember.
I headed toward the grocery store’s fresh flower department, which was inundated with Valentine displays, but something on the bookstand caught my eye.  A man that looked alarmingly like David stared back at me from a book cover and I couldn’t help but walk over to it, so mesmerized that I didn’t notice the odd lady also browsing the bookstand.
“Who really buys this crap?” the brightly dressed woman asked in an overly loud voice.  “I mean, seriously?”  She turned the cover of the book she held toward me, and staring back at me from amid hues of blacks, purples and greens, was the blue eyed, blond haired man with fangs and angel wings whose gaze had drawn me to the book stand to begin with.

My Sexy Saturday

This week...let's explore something dark and creepy.  Creepy can be sexy...and dreams can provide all kinds of psychological insight into a character.  In this scene from my paranormal WIP "Under the Granite Lies", Lauren dreams of someone who left an impression on her at a masquerade party.

But, is it really a dream?

     “Lauren…”  I heard again.

I took a deep breath and walked toward the front door of the cabin, opening it and peering out into the darkness.  White tendrils of mist snaked out toward me from the thick grove of pine trees.  I stood in the doorway as the misty fingers enveloped my legs, caressing them, beckoning me to the woods.  I obeyed.

I stepped cautiously towards the edge of the woods and paused.  There was a shaft of light reaching down from the moon toward something in the center of the patch of woods.  I took another deep breath and stepped between the trees.  My feet were bare, yet I couldn’t feel the ground under my feet as I walked, the mist provided a smooth plush carpet beneath each step.

Whispers echoed between the trees as I walked.  It could have easily been a breeze, but I knew it was not.  I could feel eyes on me, from every angle, like daggers as I walked closer to the beam of light.  The whispers on the wind grew louder the closer I got to the light and it seemed as if the  trees were closing in around me.  I imagined sinister hands reaching out for me as they had for Snow White when she ran through the woods.

A hush fell as the trees opened to reveal the same stump I had seen there before, with the beam of light focused on it.  But covering the stump was the cloth.

I knelt, the tendrils of mist snaking up my body, intertwining in my hair and lifting it around me like Medusa’s snakes.  The only sound was a hushed hum through the treetops.  I reached out and took a corner of the cloth, slowly pulling it down.  Like silk, it slid silently off the stump, revealing the wolf mask staring back at me with empty eyes.  I couldn’t help but wince, expecting to be pounced upon at any moment by the unseen forces in the trees.  I picked up the mask and held it in my hands, looking into the hollow eyes.
Johnathan.

Questions...?

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I was on a camping trip to Zion National Park with my grandparents when I was about 8 years old.  We sat down to eat and a rabbit came to watch us.  My grandmother suggested I try to write a poem about him, thus my first poem entitled “Dinner with a Hare” was composed that very day.
