Author Pamela Gibson

For the past twenty years, give or take a year, my husband and I have traveled to the Northern California coast for our anniversary. Its rugged beauty draws us and we’ve stayed in many places, generally in Mendocino or northern Sonoma County.

Our go-to spots are the Albion River Inn near Mendocino or a vacation rental at Sea Ranch, right at the Sonoma/Mendocino County border. Our anniversary falls on January 31 and both offer discounted rates during winter.

Mendocino is the inspiration for Santa Marta, a town providing a partial setting for both A Pinot for Your Thoughts and an earlier book in the series, A Touch of Chardonnay.  The headlands are walkable, the buildings are set back from the cliffs, and sea caves abound. Many fine restaurants at all price points are available there, but the Albion has an excellent restaurant on site and is a personal favorite.

Sea Ranch vacation rentals are best if you want to cook in, although we’ve ventured north to Gualala to dine at St. Orr’s.

Even though we cruised over five thousand miles in a small boat in one year and saw most of the Eastern third of the country by way of oceans, lakes, canals, and rivers, the Pacific Coast is still our favorite vacation spot.

Can she trust a man who broke her heart?
Spunky Beth Sawyer is determined to save a debt-ridden historic house she inherited from her grandmother. The Victorian mansion might be spared foreclosure if she can get a handful of cranky boarders out in time to open a bed and breakfast. Instead they’ve declared war and enlisted the aid of a man who still holds a piece of her heart.

After a dangerous assignment nearly takes his life, investigative reporter Aiden Reynoso limps home to Santa Marta to recover and rethink his career. He craves peace. Instead he finds chaos and a sexy new landlady, one he reluctantly left years ago after a brief fling.
The cliff-side mansion guards its secrets well, and so does Beth. Her beloved grandmother had an obsession. If revealed, it will ruin her reputation in a town that revere’s her memory. But the clock is ticking and Beth needs an ally. Can she trust a man who once broke her heart or is she destined to fight alone while her dreams turn as sour as spoiled wine.

Excerpt:

Aiden came down the steps, towering above her. The cat stayed behind. “What is that thing?” He pointed at the washer.
“It’s a power washer. I’m cleaning stairs, then I’m going to stain them.”
“Yourself?”
She glared. “Of course. Unless your cat wants to help.”
Aiden looked at the cat, who’d come out on the landing, twitching his tail.
“He’s busy. But if you show me what to do, I’m available.”
That was unexpected.
“This isn’t going to take long, and then I’ll move to the back steps of the house. You can get on with your concentration.”
“Fine.”
He turned around and took the steps two at a time. She kept focus on his tight butt, wondering why he was still living in Santa Marta. Oh, right...now she remembered. His grandmother, the psychic, convinced him to go off on his own, to spend some time at the beach. A seagull had snatched a rosebud out of her hand, and she knew, she knew someone at Rose Manor needed him.
She got that part right.
She’d needed him desperately that first summer after her parents died, when she realized she’d never see them again. Her grief had taken strange turns, and one led her right into Aiden’s arms.
And I’m kidding myself if I think the attraction is dead.
The minute she saw Aiden Reynoso on her doorstep this morning, the old longing reared up and nearly swallowed her. She’d wanted to fling herself into his arms and sob her heart out. But with all the problems she faced, she couldn’t risk another rejection.
He was still hot, his hair the color of midnight, and dark chocolate eyes that saw right into your soul. With that toned body, he looked like he belonged in a commercial for Greek yogurt. Even the black-frame reading glasses he had on when he bolted down the stairs worked.
He’s not for you. He made that loud and clear years ago.
Beth could handle the other tenants. They seemed docile and sweet, and she was actively looking for a place to relocate them. But Aiden was a problem. Not only was he bad for her libido, he was the one she couldn’t get rid of legally. And if she didn’t get this house turned into a moneymaker fast, she was going to lose it to the bank.

Kay Phoenix

Genre:  Contemporary Romance

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Date of Publication:  November 2, 2016

ASIN:  B01LYUQ75N

Number of pages: 170
Word Count:  41,140

Book Description:

Elle Thompson was raised in Denver. She paints. She hikes. She knows how to avoid cougar attacks.

The only cougars Michael Williams usually worries about are the ones that wear leopard print leggings on 5th Avenue.

But, when his acquisition firm sets its sights on Elle's family business, his tidy life goes awry. As things unravel, so do all his preconceived notions of love and what makes a perfect partner.

Excerpt:

Michael Williams was a soft city boy, and she was willing to bet he not only indulged in regular manicures but perhaps even enjoyed the occasional facial. She wondered whether he had rolled up his sleeves for fear of getting his expensive, white, designer dress shirt dirty with barbecue sauce. He probably wore designer underwear as well.
Boxers or briefs? Her gaze traveled south. Briefs, probably. Expensive white designer briefs. Tighty whities.
He was definitely not her type.
She smirked as her gaze traveled back up to his eyes. They were staring back into hers.
Caught red-handed! Her smirk faded and her cheeks reddened. She grabbed at a strand of hair to twirl in her fingers and pretended to be interested in a framed painting of a pig in an apron that was hung behind his left shoulder.
Something primal lurked below the surface of his gaze, and it drew her back in. It was as if she stared into the eyes of a caged animal set to pounce. Not one that had been born in a zoo, but one that had been captured in the wild and placed in captivity. Perhaps he hadn’t always been a city boy?

Author Michelle C. Reilly

My favorite vacation spot is Paris. I’ve been there only two times, but there is something about it that touches my soul. The city is immense, but it doesn’t seem that way while walking the streets. At least, to me. I’ve roamed those avenues in the early hours of the morning, while the street cleaners swipe the wet sidewalks with their plastic straw-like brooms. If you attempt their language, the Parisians are very grateful. I’m one of the lucky ones, since I speak a great deal of French.

I recommend going off the beaten path. Go to some of the tiny diners or cafes that aren’t on the tourist route. They’re always happy to see you there. Sit outside while the sun rises over the Seine. But try to do it during the spring or autumn.

Versaille Palace (Chateau de Versaille) is an easy train ride southwest from Paris. It’s a must see. If you go, make sure to pay attention to the Sallon de la Paix (Peace Salon) at the end of the Hall of Mirrors and outside Marie Antoinette’s chambers. If you look closely at the mirrors, you will see names and dates etched into them dating back to the 1800s from when the public were allowed to roam those hallowed halls.

Tagline: War, Pirates, Nor The Savage Winds of Time Will Keep Them Apart

Book Description:

Ana Salvatore, a marine biologist, wants nothing more than to have an independent life free of her mobster family. While on an excursion in the Bermuda Triangle with her uncle, his boat explodes, and she wakes to find herself in the arms of gorgeous Captain Jacen Stirling on an ancient ship. It's like a fairytale, until he tells her the year is 1814.

Jacen is on a secret mission for General Andrew Jackson to infiltrate the infamous privateer Jean Lafitte’s encampment to determine his loyalties. When he discovers Ana while on his way to meet Lafitte, he can’t decide if she’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to him, or the best.

As the Battle of New Orleans draws nearer, can Jacen and Ana work together to help their country beat the invaders? Or will the British, the war, or the savage winds of time keep them apart?

Excerpt:

The latch lifted and Captain Jacen Stirling entered. When he turned to shut the door, she noticed the captain’s own pants had the same double rows of buttons hers had. She made eye contact and found him staring at her with a stone face. Her mouth dropped open, and she stuttered as she realized he’d noticed where her gaze had been.
“I was… It’s your pants… And mine, too. They’re, like, really old-fashioned.”
He glanced down at his black britches. “My trousers aren’t, I admit, at the height of the Parisian
fashion standards, but since we are currently at war, I believe priorities are in order.”
She blinked. “I know I’ve been busy finishing up my doctorate, but I hadn’t realized things had become
so much worse in the Middle East that they’ve affected fashion trends.”
“The Middle East?”
“Uh huh.”
“Do you speak of war? In the Middle East?”
“Uh, yeah… The last time I checked. Why? What war are you referring to?”
He stood taller. “I speak of war with Great Britain and their continued efforts to prove our young country isn’t valiant enough to stand on its own.”
“Uh huh,” she muttered. Is he off his meds? “Great Britain, huh?”
He gave a curt nod.
“So, you’re, like, talking Revolutionary War?”
“That war ended some time ago. I speak of our current situation that began in 1812.”
“1812?” She suddenly felt like she was watching the final round of Wimbledon and each opponent kept
gaining the edge to win, only to lose it again. “As in one-eight-one-two?”
“No,” he scoffed. “As in one-nine-one-two. What bloody year did you think I was referring to?”
“Oh, you know, nothing like referring to a war that took place over two hundred years ago,” she said dryly.
He froze, and the edges of his lips rose in a grin. “Two hundred years ago? What year do you think this is?”
“I don’t know… Maybe 2017?”

Author Laura Bickle

One of the places that I’ve loved since I was a little girl is Serpent Mound, in Adams County, Ohio. My grandfather took my brother and I there. He took us to all the magical places he knew in Ohio and West Virginia, and Serpent Mound is one of the most magical.

Serpent Mound is an ancient effigy mound in the shape of a serpent devouring an egg. It’s more than nine hundred years old, and was built by either the Adena or Fort Ancient peoples. It’s huge…more than a thousand feet long. It stretches over the most perfectly-silent meadow I’ve ever seen. And it’s always this way, whenever I’ve been here. There aren’t many people, and it’s the perfect place to pause and wonder at the world.

Various parts of the mound correspond to celestial points in the sky, including the constellation Draco and equinoxes and solstices. There’s a lot of speculation about its purpose, but no one knows for certain what it was built for. Two burial mounds are also on the property, but as far as we know, there were no people buried under the great serpent.

I’ve written about Serpent Mound a little bit. As a child, I imagined that there was a great dragon sleeping beneath the earth. And who knows? There might be.

It had been many years since I’ve been to Serpent Mound. I went back there on a rainy October afternoon to meet a friend this past fall. It was as I had remembered it: serene, green, mysterious.

I don’t know what the Serpent Mount means, but I’m grateful to have the opportunity to pace around it, to feel its presence and imagine what it was, is, and could yet be.

Excerpt:

Peering through the cattails, she saw a man with a fishing pole, standing on an outcropping. He seemed alone, caught in a bit of reverie, gazing at his line skipping along the surface of the water.
She dipped below the surface of the water, toward the shiver of the fishing line. With green-spotted fingers, she lifted the struggling fish from the hook. The line jerked away.
The man swore.
Muirenn lifted her head above the water.
“Holy shit.” The man stumbled backward. “I didn’t realize you were swimming there . . . I . . .”
His expression changed from embarrassment to curiosity as he looked at her. The pupils of his eyes dilated. “Who . . . are you?”
Muirenn gripped the fish close to her chest, giving a small smile.
The fisherman crouched on the rock, setting his pole beside him. “Wow. You’re uh . . . green? Is that real?”
Muirenn cocked her head and slipped forward a bit in the water. The edge of her tail skimmed above the surface.
“Is that like . . . one of those tails that the girls have at that park in Florida? For a movie or something?” His suntanned brow wrinkled. “No. That’s real,” he decided. “You, um . . . want the fish? You can have it.”
She was within arm’s length of him. She released the squirming fish into the water.
“You wanted to let it go? Look, I . . .”
The man talked too much. She swam closer, tentatively.
The fisherman looked at her, at her dappled skin and the dark rust hair spreading into the water. She wouldn’t ordinarily have been so bold. The weight off her tail was going to her head. She let him take in the black of her eyes, the gills on her throat. He gazed in wonder, and his fingers twitched to a small square piece of plastic on top of his tackle box.
“Can I take your picture? What . . . are you?”
A smile played across her lips, and she spoke to him in a silvery voice. “I’m the Mermaid.”
“Wow. I . . . wow. I’m, uh, Norm. Do I, like, make a wish or something?”
“You can, if you want. I’ll listen.”
She reached up with delicate fingers to touch him. Her fingers brushed the pockets of his fishing vest, playing with wonder over the bits and baubles there meant to lure the attention of fish. The man forgot about his camera and stared, transfixed.
Muirenn reached up for his collar . . .
. . . and dragged him down into the water.
He splashed and flailed. She brought him down—down to the bottom of the creek. It wasn’t so far, but it was far enough for a land dweller. He couldn’t fight her for long. He thrashed until his lungs grew heavy with creek water. He convulsed as the lack of oxygen reached his heart and filtered up to his brain. And then he stopped.
Muirenn grinned, showing row upon row of shark-like teeth. She ripped off his arm and began to chew. It had been so long since she’d had anything but the errant fish that wandered into her realm . . . this was a meal worth waiting for.
The creek ran red.

Red as the idle red-and-white bobber drifting on the surface of the water.
